Yeh Mera Pakistan Hai

Art and life intermingle in this intimate portrait of childhood innocence, using the metaphor of painting to describe life in Pakistan during the independence movement.

Everything is black and white except for the paint bowl.

Shamina, a six year old child, is making a painting. She is mixing different colors in a bowl. The color appears in the bowl like a swirl and looks like the picture of the independence movement of Pakistan. The next picture that appears in the bowl is of Qaid-e-Azam and then Alama Iqbal. Shamina mixes the color red in the bowl and images of Muslims migrating to Pakistan appear in the same swirl affect.

Shamina asks her mother, what is heaven? Her mother explains that it is a beautiful lush green landscape and the sky is full of moon and stars. Shamina raises her hand toward the window, grabs the green landscape and puts it into the paint bowl. She paints green.

As soon as she paints, the whole room blooms into colr. She paints the flag, puts it into an envelope and sends it to her grandfather, who receives the letter on August 14.
